Differences between Circular Drum Screens and Rotary Vibrating Screens

Leave a message

Both circular drum screens and rotary vibrating screens are commonly used screening equipment, but they differ in design, operation, and application. Here are the main differences between the two machines:

Working Principle

Circular Drum Screen: The oscillating motion of a circular drum screen is elliptical or circular. It works by rotating and vibrating on a horizontal plane, causing material particles to move in a spiral motion on the screen surface. This motion pattern helps prevent material from clogging the screen holes, ensuring efficient screening.

Rotary Vibrating Screen: The oscillating motion of a rotary vibrating screen is at a certain angle to the horizontal plane. The screen is mounted on a rotating shaft, and the vibration is generated by a motor with an eccentric weight. This motion pattern enables efficient screening and can handle a variety of materials.

Impact on Materials: As is well known, vibrating screens screen materials through high-speed vibration. Because high-speed vibration can damage the shape of materials, many granular, crystalline, and fragile materials are not suitable for screening with vibrating screens, such as chicken essence, monosodium glutamate, sugar, and cooked foods.

The cylindrical screen employs a slight elliptical oscillating motion without high-speed vibration, resulting in minimal impact on materials, preventing damage to their shape, and significantly improving material yield.

Regarding maintenance and lifespan, the rotary vibrating screen utilizes high-speed vibration, which can cause significant damage. Prolonged use can lead to vibration cracks or deformation. Screen damage is often not due to normal wear but rather to friction within the vibrating screen itself, resulting in relatively higher noise levels. Furthermore, the rotary vibrating screen uses a vibrating motor, which has a shorter lifespan and higher maintenance requirements compared to conventional motors.

The cylindrical screen, employing a low-speed oscillating principle, ensures a longer equipment lifespan, reduces maintenance costs, minimizes noise, and enhances safety.

Screening Efficiency: Due to its tumbling motion and multi-layered screen structure, the cylindrical drum screen typically offers higher screening efficiency for difficult-to-screen materials and fine particles. The tumbling motion helps break up agglomerates, ensuring precise separation.

Rotary Vibrating Screen: Rotary vibrating screens also offer high screening efficiency, but are generally more suitable for materials that are easy to separate and do not require tumbling motion.

Processing Capacity and Output:

Cylindrical Rotary Screen: Compared to rotary vibrating screens, rotary screens typically have lower processing capacity. They are generally used in small to medium-sized applications.

Rotary Vibrating Screen: Rotary screens have a larger processing capacity and are suitable for handling large volumes of materials.

Screen Cleaning Mechanism:

Cylindrical Screen: Cylindrical screens are equipped with bouncing balls or ultrasonic cleaning systems to keep the screen openings clear and prevent clogging.

Rotary Vibrating Screen: These screens typically use rubber balls or sliders to clean the screen surface to maintain screening efficiency.

Applications:

Cylindrical Screen: Commonly used for fine particle separation, screening of difficult-to-screen materials, and high-precision grading applications. Common industries include pharmaceuticals, food processing, chemicals, and mining.

Rotary Vibrating Screen: These screens have a wide range of applications in agriculture, plastics, ceramics, metallurgy, and many other industries. They are well-suited for general screening purposes.

Both cylindrical screens and rotary vibrating screens have their advantages, and the choice should be made based on specific application requirements, material characteristics, and throughput needs. To select the appropriate screen type, it is essential to understand the characteristics of the material being processed and the desired screening results.
